Right now, our hottest song is “The Letter”, but not just one version. The first time it became a hit was for the Box Tops in 1967, spending 4 weeks in the top slot of the Billboard Hot 100 chart and nabbing the number 2 position for the entire year. Three years later, it became a top ten single for Joe Cocker, peaking at number 7 and giving him his first top ten appearance in the U.S.
This tune was penned by Wayne Carson who also helped write “Always on My Mind”, another song that became a major hit for several artists.
We have three versions of “The Letter” in our library: The Box Tops’ original hit and both the live and studio versions of Joe Cocker’s cover. Which version do you prefer?
